Auckland System Management

Running Auckland's motorways alongside the roads they feed

Auckland System Management operates and maintains Auckland's motorway network for NZTA. It was one of the early partners behind myWorksites, and today plans motorway works on the same platform as Auckland Council's local roads.

The challenge

Auckland's motorways carry more traffic than any other part of the state highway network. Every lane, ramp or full closure has a knock-on effect, on the motorway itself and on the local roads that traffic spills onto. Closures feed the daily reporting that drives journey management across the region, so the information has to be right and it has to be current.

Works programmes don't sit still either. ASM's teams re-forecast their year every month, while a traffic management plan might be approved for a three-month window for a job that takes a day or two. Coordinating around that, with council teams working the network next door, is a high-stakes game.

How ASM uses myWorksites

Auckland System Management is an alliance between NZTA, Fulton Hogan and HEB Construction, and was one of the early partners that helped shape the platform. Corridor access requests and TMPs for the motorway network are processed on myWorksites, and the planning map shows motorway works alongside everything planned on Auckland Council's local roads.

Because Auckland Council is on the same platform, the two teams can see each other's plans. Where a council job affects the motorway, ASM can review the TMP before it's approved, and both sides can line their works up around each other rather than finding out on the day.

ASM use the deployment function in myWorksites to drive their daily closure reports which in turn feed into Auckland Transport Operations Centre and NZTA’s journey planner. They separate the question of whether a plan is safe from the question of when the work is actually happening. Contractors book the days they need and reconfirm them closer to the time, so the network view shows what's really planned for today and the next week.

Why it matters for other road authorities

Motorways and state highways don't stop at council boundaries, and neither does the traffic. Anywhere NZTA and a council share a network, having both on one platform means the people planning works on each side can see the whole picture. Auckland shows it works at the busiest end of the country.

Someone was discharging water onto our network and we didn't know who. I went into the planning map, found the worksite, got the contact details and resolved it with a phone call. All from my desk, in a couple of minutes.
