Clearway Conference and Awards - Team Reflections

myWorksites was proud to be the Premium Partner of the recent inaugural Clearway Conference and Awards organised by the Temporary Traffic Management Industry Steering Group (TTM-ISG).

The purpose of the event was to bring together leaders from across the sector - from temporary traffic management to infrastructure planners who are all trying to help the future of infrastructure delivery be built by a connected sector, delivering better outcomes for New Zealand.

Six of the myWorksites team spent the day at the conference - speaking to customers, colleagues, and others in the sector; from George Will’s opening keynote, to conversations on our booth. If there's one thing that came through to us, it's that attendees were really open to talking about the industry - both what’s working, but also what's not, and how we can try and do it better together.

This is a brief summary of our reflections of the day.

What were the main conversation themes?

  • The importance of open dialogue and collaboration between RCA's, vendors and contractors - as this is when the industry performs best

  • This flowed through to agreement that we need to improve productivity - if we want to maintain our road assets we need to change current approaches that mean we only find out about clashes or delays too late, but build collaboration and productivity into our way of working

  • Learning about myWorksites, obviously! Lots of people came to our booth as they had heard about our work with NZTA, the Wellington Transport Alliance and about changes with the Regional Traffic and Transport Management Centre (RTTMC) Team and the Network Controls Team

  • We had some great conversations about what these changes means for them, for the myWorksites system and what is coming next

Conference surprises

Conversations at conferences can be enlightening and surprising, especially when it’s like Clearway which brought together a group of people from across the industry. Our team highlighted a few of their most ‘Oh!’ insights:

  • Some areas are already undertaking managed retreat of infrastructure, for example letting roads fall back from sealed to gravel
  • I was surprised by how much people (RCA-side as well as applicants) liked myWorksites. Actually, really surprised! (Should we admit that?! 😆) The common gist was:

“It’s much better than ... (whatever we have to use now)."

  • Also surprised that there are patches in NZ which don't use any system/process at all. It almost felt like "the wild west” with one attendee saying their ‘process’ is to send an email to the council with their intentions, and when there is no response to say they can’t do it, they'll just start the work

What did you enjoy most?

Well it definitely seems our team had a blast - even those who are normally quite shy!

  • I enjoyed hearing directly from people how they use myWorksites every day
  • I loved the good feedback as much hearing about the pain points or rough edges
  • One person came for a yarn about how she uses myWorksites, and we came up with some neat feature ideas which we have already shipped to production
  • I had a great day yarning and chatting, learning and "showing-off" our system.
  • It felt organic and not forced, reciprocally curious and benevolent

Shout-outs to other speakers or booths

It wasn’t all just about our own booth and customers - the idea was collaboration and meeting others. Two of the highlights:

  • A big shout-out to the Downer crew who shared the everyday reality of using myWorksites and their experiences of managing a big traffic management organisation
  • Men at Work's founder, Esther Hyde chatted about the difficulty of finding good on-road staff

By the end of the day the team were tired, tired, tired - but totally energised by the Conference. We got such valuable feedback and ideas, got to meet others across the industry and really learn about the challenges and how they are being addressed.
